"Everybody I knew from my world is gone," Darcy says, punctuating the fact that, yes, she does feel exceptionally isolated. "I recognizes faces of a few others, but I don't know them." Her throat feels tight suddenly in tandem with a thought that she gives voice to.

"Jane would know what to do. She's the smartest person I've ever met in my life. She's a genius." Her eyes sting, and she blinks a few times in rapid succession, but she manages to keep from getting too wrapped up in the sudden unexpected emotion, and avoids shedding tears. "It's the stupidest thing, but I thought she was at my pod when I woke up after the jump this time. You don't think I'm losing it, do you?"
