[ Severus doesn't give compliments often, so he doesn't know how to deal with people taking them poorly. At least that means he isn't properly bothered, just a little worried he's said something stupid. It doesn't show outwardly. He has no idea how to explain that her rough edges (occasionally serrated edges) and bouts of temper are why he's able to like her. He's aware that to anyone who knows, it looks like he put Lily on some unreal pedestal, but it's only the unreal part that's not true. It takes so little for him to be overwhelmed with kindness, and he can't accept it without the grit and grain of salt that makes it human - that fairytale sweetness is what's unreal to him.
