That's the idea. [ It takes him a minute to respond - Severus always has to set something down to pick up his communicator and then fuss with it to turn it on voice setting. Anyway: joke about overfilling his schedule on purpose aside, ] What can I help you with?
[ Well that's not what he expected, but for now the implications sail right over his head. ]
We speak sometimes. We arrived at the same jump.
[ No guile in his voice - they showed up more or less together, at first at the lockers then in their passenger floor hallway. She was concerned over the fact that someone had smashed his face in. As is polite, he supposes. ]
And it's just talking. I see. Well that's good to know--not that I'd have a problem with you if it were more than just talking, just that kids these days... It's hard to keep track. Embarrassing subject to bring up with your dad, you know?
She hasn't told you she's dating anyone?
[ He'll get the disarming topic out of the way first. ]
[ The gears in his head turning are almost audible. But his voice isn't, because he's dead quiet for a drawn-out moment. ]
What- No. She hasn't. [ GENUINELY CONFUSED. Finally his brain catches up with itself and, more collected but wry, ] I would think she'd have better taste than all that.
[ Dude have you seen him he's a sickly pale unattractive nerd. Your daughter is hot!! ]
[ Nathan takes your topic swerve and responds with placid confidence, as though he expected the conversation to go that way in the first place.
Not really, but he can roll with it. Especially since where Edgeworth is concerned he actually holds a stake in the consequences. It's a good swerve. ]
It was an unexpected morning. [ Deadpan. ] And lucky that he didn't lose his mind at someone incapable of defending themselves against a telekinetic attack. I was concerned for you and your family, given how public his opinion of you is.
I've seen telekinesis before, and while I'm at risk from that sort of thing myself, it's one of the arrows in Peter's quiver, and Claire is pretty much invulnerable. I appreciate your concern for them, though; for us.
If you mind me asking...what did he do to you, exactly?
It seemed prudent with you stuck in a tube. [ Like Peter is, now. ]
Lured me to an isolated floor, tried to pick a fight with me about someone from my world, grabbed me when I tried to leave, then threw me into a wall with his mind. When I reacted to get him to stop, he claimed to have no memory of using any kind of ability on me, and proceeded to have a panic attack for an hour intermixed with continuing to be furious at me for things I haven't done.
[ Nathan inhales slowly, taking in all of that, and finally as he exhales gives his head a slight shake. ]
Telekinesis doesn't exactly come with obligatory mindwiping. When my brother picked up the power he used it the first time by accident, threw up his hand and sent a row of lockers flying out between himself and the big bad guy chasing him. He knew he was the one did it.
But then again the whole damn story is odd. Doesn't sound like the Edgeworth I know at all--nevermind that I didn't know he could do that. Suspected there was something, but... [ There had been a conversation, but he'd more or less ignored it at the time. People talked, and if Edgeworth was really telekinetic, wouldn't he have mentioned it to him by now? ] You sure you haven't pissed off any telepaths?
Charles went to Tyke about it. [ Speaking of telepaths. ] She said she knew.
[ So. Yep. ]
I pissed off a violent teenager who apparently has Edgeworth's ear. He was aware he had the capability, but the attack in itself he refused to acknowledge. [ Wryly, ] Your brother was kind enough to document my injuries.
The thing is...Edgeworth isn't a violent person. I'm not sure he even knows how to use a gun. Or throw a punch. You know, what I'm saying is that in my experience he's soft.
Mm. [ Severus sounds like he's contemplating that.. buuut he's not too convinced. To be fair: he's only been here a few jumps, and this was his primary experience with Edgeworth. Not the best first in-person impression. ]
Sirius Black. Who as a grown man is in prison in my time.
I suppose I must add the disclaimer that, according to at least one person from further along than I, he was framed. [ Severus sounds really unconvinced. ] Treason, and murdering twelve people. You missed a bit of a spectacle while you were out, Remus Lupin almost beat him to death at the jump before I could get him off of it. As much as I might gladly bring a bottle of champagne to Black's funeral, he's still a bloody child, here. Not that his age makes him less capable of exhibiting the behaviors that make people at home believe him to be a mass murderer.
That's awfully generous of you to admit. I'm not sure I'd have been so kind were I in your position. Sirius is a prat, but he's a malleable prat. He wouldn't be doing anything of any use around here if not for that; just goofing off and giving the rest of us a hard time.
Lupin didn't seem much like a beat people to a pulp sort of guy either, though, come to mention it. Is there something in the water, or am I missing a part of this story?
He'll shriek about it if I don't. [ If Nathan does any digging, he'll see the instances of Sirius flinging himself at a few of Severus's network ventures, quipping such mature defenses as UR SUCH A PRICK OMG and etc.
And then-- a pause. Maybe incredulously quiet, about Lupin not seeming to be violent. ]
Harry got the second wave. He did not experience what the generation before him did.
[ Severus is quiet for a moment, considering. He has no idea how to properly explain. ]
War for us is not like it is for you. We do not have a military. It is small scale and personal and touches every one of us face to face. War is families being murdered in their homes, assassinations, children abducted and their parents tortured. Half of my students are orphans. Half of the ones that aren't have parents in hospital permanently or in prison.
Black has not experienced the war. Lupin has. I have.

She's a perceptive girl--and a Petrelli. I have a lot of faith in her taste, all things considered.
[ Suck it up it's a compliment, whether you like them or not. ]
You'll give me the heads up if that situation changes, won't you? I'd consider it a personal favor.
[ Cashing in when least expected. ]
