Witches and wizards are sturdier than humans mentally and physically; boggarts are evolved to bother us, not you, and thus pestering the non-magical people here may result in more dire results than we're used to. Combined with the ship's influence, I believe it would be foolish to approach it and assume it will behave 'normally'.
So the fact that it's bothering everyone and not just witches and wizards is probably because of the ship. You're advocating running from it, or is there anything we can do until someone with magic shows up?
